Indoor vs outdoor pickleballs: what’s the difference?

Pickleball has rapidly become one of the fastest-growing sports, captivating players of all ages with its unique blend of tennis, badminton, and ping-pong. Whether you’re a seasoned player or just getting started, choosing the right ball for your game is crucial. The type of ball you use can significantly impact your playing experience, depending on whether you’re playing indoors or outdoors. We are going to dive into the differences between indoor and outdoor pickleball balls, helping you make an informed decision for your next game.

Importance of choosing the right pickleball

Pickleball balls are not a one-size-fits-all item. The environment you play in—whether it’s an indoor gym or an outdoor court—directly influences the ball’s behavior, durability, and your overall game performance. Here’s what you need to know to choose the best ball for your playing conditions.

Indoor Pickleball Balls

Indoor balls have fewer holes. They generally have 26 holes vs 40 holes in the outdoor balls. These holes are larger, allowing the ball to travel more slowly and with greater control. This is ideal for indoor play mainly on a gym floor or rec center. Many players choose to play with outdoor pickleballs indoors if they are playing on outdoor surfaced courts like you might find at The Picklr which has a location in Loveland and soon to have several more locations all the way from Castle Rock to Cheyenne. Indoor balls are made from a softer plastic which results in a lower bounce. This is great for some indoor surfaces where the ball needs to respond predictably. The reduced bounce makes them easier to handle on slicker indoor surfaces. Lastly, since they are made from a softer material, they are quieter when they hit the paddle and the floor, making it more pleasant in small indoor environments where noise can be an issue.

Best used for: indoor gym floors, rec centers, slower play.

Outdoor Pickleball Balls

Outdoor pickleballs have 40 smaller holes, which are great for wind resistance and maintaining a predictable trajectory and bounce during play. They are the only ball to use outdoors, since it is better in windy conditions which are prevalent outdoors – especially in Colorado. Made from a harder plastic, these outdoor balls are designed to withstand the rougher surfaces of the concrete and asphalt outdoor cours. They do well in varying weather conditions such as wind, heat, and cool. Because of the harder plastic material, they have a higher bounce which is better for the outdoor court that may be not as flat and even as the indoor court. Outdoor pickleballs make the play quicker and more aggressive. The downside to the outdoor ball, is they wear out quicker due to the harder surface and more aggressive play. Other than that, they are the preferred ball for most pickleball players.

Best used for: driveways, asphalt, and concrete outdoor surfaces, and park settings.

Choosing the right ball for your game

When deciding between indoor and outdoor pickleball balls, consider the following:

Where you play: If you’re primarily playing indoors on smooth, gymnasium floors, go for indoor balls that give you better control and a quieter game. If your game is mostly outdoors, or on outdoor surfaced courts, go for outdoor balls that can withstand the elements and provide a faster, more challenging game.

Your playing style: Do you prefer a game that emphasizes strategy and long rallies? Indoor balls will suit you best. If you like a fast-paced game with plenty of power, outdoor balls will match your style.

Weather conditions: Outdoor players should also consider the weather. On windy days, the extra weight and smaller holes of outdoor balls will help maintain a consistent play experience.

Understanding the differences between indoor and outdoor pickleball balls can make a significant difference in your game. Whether you’re looking for more control in your shots or a faster-paced outdoor challenge, choosing the right ball will enhance your playing experience and help you get the most out of every match.
