Fall into Pickleball: Tips for Playing in Cooler Weather and Shorter Days

As October rolls in and the days grow shorter, pickleball players may find themselves adjusting their game for the changing season. Cooler temperatures and reduced daylight can present challenges, but they also offer new opportunities to enjoy the sport in a fresh way. Whether you’re an outdoor court regular or prefer indoor play, this is the perfect time to fine-tune your approach and continue improving your game.

One of the main considerations for playing pickleball in fall is staying warm. As temperatures drop, it’s important to dress in layers so that you can stay comfortable throughout the game. Start with moisture-wicking base layers to keep sweat off your skin, and add outerwear that’s easy to remove as you warm up. We have all experienced the many layers needed to be comfortable while playing in the fall! You start with a hoodie or jacket, and eventually pare down to just an athletic t-shirt. Don’t forget about grip! Cooler weather can make paddle handles feel slick, so consider using a tackier grip tape or gloves designed for sports to maintain control.

Another factor is the diminishing daylight. With the sun setting earlier, outdoor pickleballers might need to adjust their schedules or explore indoor options. Check out our interactive map and search ‘indoor’ to find an indoor club near you. Additionally, portable lighting solutions for outdoor courts are becoming more common, providing a convenient way to extend playtime well into the evening.

Finally, as fall leads into winter, this is a great time to maintain and even sharpen your pickleball skills. Consider joining a clinic or participating in a fall tournament. If the weather forces you indoors, use the opportunity to practice your precision shots and work on footwork in a more controlled environment. Pickleball doesn’t have to be a summer sport only—embracing fall play will keep you engaged and prepared for next summer!
